Harvard Business School 的 Marco Iansiti 教授，和 Keystone Strategy, Inc. 的 Gregory L. Richards 總監，在名為 The Business of Free Software: Enterprise Incentives, Investment, and Motivation in the Open Source Community 的文章中，分析了商業軟體公司投資開放源碼專案的動機，並觀察後續的影響。依照投資來源的不同，主要的開放源碼專案，被分成 money-driven cluster 及 community-driven cluster 兩類。商業公司的投入，是否會改變開放源碼社群的「本質」呢? 有待日後的觀察。
